5 Signs Your Montreal Business Is Flying Blind on Data

Every week I talk to small business owners in Montreal who are working incredibly hard — long hours, real dedication — but making their most important decisions based on gut feel rather than numbers. Sometimes instinct is right. But often, it's quietly costing them money they don't even know they're losing.

Here are 5 signs your business might be flying blind on data — and what to do about each one.

1. You don't know which product or service makes you the most profit

Revenue is not profit. You might have a product that sells well but costs too much to deliver, or a service that seems small but has incredible margins. If you can't answer "what is my most profitable offering?" without sitting down to manually calculate it, you're missing one of the most valuable levers in your business.

2. Your "numbers meeting" is someone pulling Excel files for an hour

If getting a picture of how your business is doing requires someone to manually export data, copy-paste between spreadsheets, and build a report from scratch every week — that's not a reporting process. That's a warning sign. Every hour spent assembling data is an hour not spent understanding it or acting on it.

3. You have data in three different places and no single view

Sales in your POS system. Customer info in a spreadsheet. Inventory in another tool. Orders tracked in email. Sound familiar? When your data lives in silos, you can't see patterns across the business. You make decisions about one part of the business without knowing how it affects another.

4. You find out about a problem after it already hurt you

A product ran out of stock and you didn't notice until customers complained. A key client went quiet and you only realized weeks later. A cost crept up over three months and you only saw it at year-end. Reactive businesses are always one step behind. The goal of good data isn't to report on the past — it's to catch problems before they become expensive.

5. Your best decisions come from your most experienced employee's memory

Tribal knowledge is valuable — but it's fragile. When your best insight into "what works" lives in one person's head rather than in your systems, you're one resignation away from losing it. Good data systems capture what's working so the whole team can act on it, not just the person who's been there longest.

What to do next

If two or more of these signs apply to your business, the good news is: none of them require a massive investment to fix. The first step is a clear picture of where your data actually lives today — what tools you're using, what gets tracked, and what's falling through the cracks.

That's exactly what we cover in a free 30-minute data audit. No pitch, no commitment — just clarity.
